When a person has a fear of dentists or dental treatment they cannot care for their teeth - this leads to dental decay, gum diseases and inevitably pain. In the end that person will loose their teeth. The embarrassment caused by the phobia, along with the eventual decay and loss of teeth, often results in the person repressing their problem and trying to cure themselves with painkillers, other medication/drugs or even alcohol. Worse, they may look for an alternative to visiting a dentist, such as treatment under general anaesthetic or sedation, thinking that they’ll wake up with their problems solved, but this means that they can’t take responsibility for their own treatment – and this route may even prove to be dangerous. The fear of dental treatment, and the resulting unhealthy mouth, leads to greater social problems such as sleeplessness, poor diet and a lack of concentration at work or with family, children and friends. If you are suffering from this type of phobia you may feel so uncomfortable or embarrassed that you actually avoid social occasions - if you don't know how to be helped out of the cycle you may become a "forgotten person". We know that there are many different reasons for dental phobia, a bad experience, a careless remark, a feeling of embarrassment for letting the fear control you etc.
